In a bedroom, the things that matter are noise, a thermostat that holds a steady temperature, and an auto-off timer. These picks are either fanless or have quiet fans, and each one has tip-over and overheat protection. A typical bedroom of 100–150 sq ft is well within what one 1,500 W heater can handle.

Using a heater in a bedroom

  • Set the timer to warm the room before bed, or to shut off an hour or two after you fall asleep. Safety groups advise not running a heater overnight while you sleep.
  • Keep it 3 feet from the bed, curtains and laundry.
  • Around 65–68°F is a comfortable sleeping temperature for most people, and costs less to hold than 72°F.

Space heater safety basics

  • Plug the heater straight into a wall outlet. Heater makers and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission both warn against extension cords and power strips.
  • A 1,500 W heater draws about 12.5 amps. Don't run two on the same circuit, or with a microwave or hair dryer on that circuit.
  • Keep 3 feet of clear space around it: beds, curtains, paper and clothes.
  • Look for tip-over and overheat protection and a safety certification mark (UL, ETL or CSA).
  • Turn it off when you leave the room. Safety groups also advise turning heaters off when you go to sleep, so a timer or auto-off setting is useful in a bedroom.
  • 240 V garage heaters are hardwired. Have an electrician run the circuit and follow the wire and breaker sizes in the manual.

What is the quietest type of space heater?

An oil-filled radiator. It has no fan, so apart from the thermostat clicking it is silent. Of the fan heaters, models with brushless motors are quietest.

Is it safe to leave a space heater on all night?

Safety groups advise against it. Use the timer to warm the room before bed or to shut off after you fall asleep, and pick a heater with tip-over and overheat protection.
